Janet Smalley

A transformative experience, Janet earned her BA in English from Winthrop University and has served as a University Trustee there for 16 years. Later, she earned a Masters in Administration and Supervision from Clemson University. (…And interestingly enough served as an English Tutor for the National Champion Tiger Football Team. You can guess the year.) Her degrees led to a wonderful career in Oconee County as a teacher and as a school and district administrator. In 2009, she established CompletEd Educational Services, working for both the South Carolina and US Departments of Education as well as for many schools and districts throughout the US. Her Service on many nonprofit boards and civic organizations has included the United Way of Oconee County, Friends of the Library, Lunney Museum, GFWC-SC Poet Laureate, Oconee Community Theatre, Walhalla Performing Arts Center, Clemson University Brooks Center, and the Walhalla Partners for Progress, of which she is a founding member. She feels blessed to work on many projects to serve the Walhalla Community including: writing the Timken grant that funded renovation of the Earle House which now serves as the Main Street Walhalla office, then supervising its redesign and construction with Trehel Corporation; fundraising for the beautiful St John’s Meeting House and Main Street Public Restrooms; collaborating with Walhalla founding families to secure quilts and their histories for the Heritage Quilt installations on Main Street; working to save the “Rock Building,” that now is Patriots Hall Veterans Museum: and grant writing through GFWC-SC’s Progress Foundation for the Walhalla City Entrance signs, restoration of the youth soccer facility at the Walhalla City Park and numerous upgrades at the Walhalla Depot since its refurbishment for public events, all achieved through the efforts of the Walhalla Woman’s Club. “We truly live in the loveliest and most advantageous area in SC and in the entire Southeast. It is exciting to see decades of thoughtful work come to life. Let’s continue the journey for those here now and for those who will come after.”
